Is Self-Study Enough for the GRE?

The short answer is yes — for most students. ETS (the GRE test-maker) publishes official practice tests that accurately predict your real score, and the GRE covers content you have already studied (high-school math, college-level reading). What self-study cannot do is give you targeted feedback on your specific weak patterns. That is where a tutor adds the most value.

This guide gives you a complete self-study framework. If you hit a plateau, the tutor section at the end explains exactly when and how to get expert help.

GRE Structure (2026)

The GRE General Test is offered as a computer-adaptive test at test centres and at home (GRE at Home). Since the September 2023 update, the test is shorter than the previous version.

SectionQuestionsTimeScore Range
Analytical Writing1 essay (Analyze an Issue)30 min0–6 (0.5 increments)
Verbal Reasoning (×2)27 Q per section18 min/section130–170
Quantitative Reasoning (×2)27 Q per section21 min/section130–170

Total testing time: approximately 1 hour 58 minutes. The test is section-adaptive: your performance on the first Verbal section determines the difficulty level of the second Verbal section (same for Quant).

When to Add a GRE Tutor

Self-study is effective for building foundational knowledge, but a specialist tutor accelerates improvement in three specific situations:

  • You have been studying 4+ weeks and your score is not improving — a tutor diagnoses the specific error patterns you cannot see yourself
  • You are targeting a very competitive program (325+) — at the highest levels, every point requires precise strategy refinement that is difficult to self-identify
  • You have a specific section bottleneck — for example, Text Completion errors that keep you stuck at 158 Verbal despite a strong vocabulary, or a geometry blind spot dragging down Quant
  • You have limited time — a tutor can compress a 16-week plan into 8 weeks by eliminating low-value study activities

Stuck below your target GRE score?

b4Exams GRE specialists identify exactly why your score is plateauing and build a plan to break through. Most students improve 8–12 points in 6–8 sessions.
